Our thoughts are bees: Writers Working with Schools
Thu 2 Jun 2005
This definitive new book by NAWE members Mandy Coe and Jean Sprackland is published this month by Wordplay Press. Sponsored by NAWE, it is available to members at half price.
This month sees the publication of a groundbreaking book for teachers, writers and those who co-ordinate writing projects in schools. Our thoughts are bees gives advice on organising exciting projects, from the author's visit to the long-term residency. It examines the potential impact on young people's lives, and sets out a vision for the future of writing in education.

The book's authors are both published poets with extensive experience in schools. Asked how the book came about, they say this: "When we were first approached to deliver training and consultancy for writers and teachers, we searched for a book that covered the issues we encountered. Eventually we realised we would have to write it ourselves!"

The book, relevant in all parts of Britain, is the result of a year's research, funded by Arts Council England and supported by the leading organisations in this field: NAWE, NALD, Poetry Society and Writing Together. It covers all the important issues, including how writers can find work in schools; training and professional development; planning and leading workshops; and writers and teachers working in partnership.

The Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, has said: "This book is exactly what it should be: useful, practical and detailed but also inspiring, enlightening and far-reaching. Writers as well as teachers will find it invaluable. I recommend it whole-heartedly."

NAWE members can order the book via the NAWE office at £5 plus £2 p&p. All other orders at £10 per copy (plus £1.80 p&p), from Wordplay Press, 61 Burnley Road, Ainsdale, Southport, Merseyside PR8 3LP.
