Digital print offers new possibilities for authors and teachers
Tue 13 Aug 2002
York digital printing specialist Wood & Richardson has teamed up with a Cheshire-based author to provide storybooks and teaching aids for schools across the UK.
The Ebeneezer children's story was written, illustrated and published by Wirral-based schoolteachers, Pamela Rankin and Ian Pierce. Pamela approached York-based printing firm, Wood & Richardson, to produce the first edition of the Ebeneezer book last year.

Pamela, a former art teacher, co-wrote and illustrated the book. She says, "The book was written by teachers, for teachers so it is very much an entertaining story with an educational slant. We published the first edition ourselves in relatively low quantities so, as is so often the case, budget was an issue! Fortunately, the response was extremely positive and the Wirral local authority picked up on the books for use in schools throughout the area. Since then we have printed a further edition and we're preparing for more as demand continues."

Three different formats were required for the initial publication: pocket-sized books and larger reading books for use in schools as well as oversized copies for teaching purposes. Pamela approached Wood & Richardson, whose digital print capabilities provided the solution she needed.

Andrew Hudson, sales and marketing manager at Wood & Richardson, adds, "Digital printing is ideal for this type of project. It is a cost-effective way of producing high quality printwork in relatively low quantities and we are finding that many organisations in the education sector are coming to us for cost-effective print solutions for their teaching materials."

Pamela adds, "Wood & Richardson have been very supportive and incredibly enthusiastic about the project. They've provided me with exactly the advice and technical support I needed and we're now working together to plan for the production of the second book in the Ebeneezer series."
