AWP Conference
Wed 7 Mar 2007
Graeme Harper was amongst NAWE members taking part in the annual AWP Conference held this year in Atlanta Georgia. His panel discussed the "Battle of the Terminal Degrees: MFA v PhD".

The focus of this session was on the difference between the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Creative Writing and the PhD in Creative Writing. As the British approach has been to develop PhDs, rather than MFAs, this meant talking substantially about the development of the UK PhD in Creative Writing or Creative and Critical Writing. The interest in the situation in the UK from the very largely US audience was strong. The audience asked a range of questions about the PhD in Creative Writing, they also explored the idea of undertaking such degrees in the UK, and the nature of knowledge exchanged in such programmes. Offered an outline of the nature of doctoral study in Creative Writing, this audience was interested in hearing about the concept of critical responsiveness in Creative Writing doctoral study and about the potential of such programmes to further enhance the nature of Creative Writing practice and understanding. The panel was such a success that many rushed up to the conference table after the event to investigate whether they could find out more about UK PhD programmes.

We should like to encourage more NAWE members to submit proposals for the next AWP Conference, which will be held in New York, 30 January - 2 February 2008. Full details can be found at:
