We are pleased to be running two extra seminars in our Professional Development Programme, in partnership with the Birmingham Book Festival. These are taking place on 10 and 12 September, with tutors Anne Caldwell and Mandy Coe.
Refreshing Your Practice - a skill sharing day for experienced writers who work in education 10 September 2007, 10am-3pm Highbury Hall, 4 Yew Tree Road, Moseley, Birmingham B13 8QG - in partnership with the Birmingham Book Festival
This
day is aimed at writers with a track record of working in schools and
other educational settings. It will be a practical, hands on day where
writers come together to discuss common ground in their work together,
and share tried and tested ideas that they have used in their work with
others. The day will enable writers to take away a fresh set of
workshop ideas for various age ranges and purposes and have a chance to
look at ways in which they would like to take their career and
professional development further. Facilitator - Anne Caldwell Anne
is a poet with over ten years experience of working in educational
settings. Her work is anthologised in two new collections this year by
Cinnamon Press and Worple Press. She is currently professional
development manager for NAWE and NALD and runs a company called Sources
that specialises in running projects that combine creative writing with
other art forms, particularly New Media. She has coordinated Taking the
Plunge alongside Mandy Coe, which trained writers to work in schools in
partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University's Writing School.
Developing Your Career as a Freelance Writer in Education
12 September 2007, 10am-3pm
Highbury Hall, 4 Yew Tree Road, Moseley, Birmingham B13 8QG
- in partnership with the Birmingham Book Festival
This seminar will enable participants to sharpen up their planning
skills and learn from new developments in this field. Focusing on how
to set up a schools visit that works well for the writer, teachers and
pupils it will explore the development of a freelance career using
writing as a creative tool in education and other settings. It is aimed
at writers wanting to build up their work in schools and educational
venues, and will also look at building up a tool kit of workshop ideas
to use in the classroom.
Feedback on a previous seminar:
'It exceeded my expectations because it instilled confidence in me that
I could do it! 'It met all my aims " of how to plan and build up a
portfolio of workshop ideas and exercises, how to approach schools, how
to build relationships with teachers and leave something behind of
value to them, as well as the students.'
Facilitator - Mandy Coe
Mandy Coe's collections, Pinning the Tail on the Donkey (Spike) and
The Weight of Cows (Shoestring Press 2004) both include poems selected
for the Forward Book of Poetry. Her poetry for children is
anthologised by Bloomsbury, Oxford University Press, and Hoddor
Wayland. She delivers consultancies on writing in education projects
in galleries, museums and schools. With the Poetry Society's
poetryclass team, she delivers INSET for teachers and with NAWE she
mentors writers who wish to work in schools.
