Barry Lopez talks purpose and egos in writing
In this interview the esteemed writer reveals how his work is born and shaped.

American Barry Lopez has written a vast array of fiction, non fiction and creative non fiction. His ideas about stories are shaped by time spent with aboriginal people in the high Arctic in Canada and in Alaska and the Northern Territory in Australia. This interview provides an insight into the purpose and birth of 'story'.

"There are many frames of mind that you can take as a writer. I don't think any one of them is right and the others are wrong. But my frame of mind in non-fiction is that I much prefer -- am only capable really -- of being the reader's companion rather than the reader's authority. I don't believe in definitive books."
