The Duchess Of Malfi at The Old Vic
John Webster’s Great Jacobean Tragedy
John Webster’s great Jacobean tragedy was written around 1612-13 and is considered one of the finest works of English renaissance drama. Set in Italy between 1504 and 1510, The Duchess of Malfi tells the tale of a widowed noblewoman who divides her family after falling in love with a lowly steward. Her brothers, not wishing to share their inheritance, forbid her from remarrying. The duchess and her children are forced to flee into exile, only to be captured and returned to face death after being betrayed by a confidant. Eve Best, best known for playing ‘Dr O’Hara’ in Nurse Jackie and ‘Wallis Simpson’ in The King’s Speech, returns to The Old Vic in the title role.
