Supporting the Next Generation

On 15 September 2011, NAWE, Arvon and NALD members came together for a day of discussion and debate about how to ensure that the next generation of young writers and literature activists can flourish. The event focused on the needs of young people outside formal education and explored ways in which they can be supported. Read more.

Writers and Commissioning

Participants on 23 September 2010 making ‘mini commissioned boxes’ on the theme of freedom

We ran a highly successful day on writers and the commissioning process on the 23rd September 2010.  in partnership with NALD (National Association for Literature Development), and hosted by Arvon at the Free Word Centre. A mixture of thirty-five writers and potential commissioners came to the event, and the discussion was wide ranging and creative.  Many themes emerged from the day, such as the role of the commissioner, ideas around surprise, subversion and a writer’s freedom to respond to a brief,  and what kind of theme produces the most interesting work.  Further material on this fascinating topic is now available here.

Here are some of the comments from the day:

‘As a commissioner it was good to evaluate and question my own practice. I acknowledged what I do well and what could be improved.’

‘Really enjoyed the day – excellent!’

‘This day provided space to think and challenge my ideas’
