I have been a professional freelance writer since 1979 and have been hosting writing workshops in schools for nearly 20 years. My textbook on teaching fiction and non-fiction writing, 'Tricks of the Writer's Trade - and how to teach them to children aged 8-14' was published by Routledge in 2011.
I am a former journalist and TV staff writer, and since becoming freelance I have acquired 2000+ television credits as writer/script editor on programmes for pre-school and older children, teenagers and adults. Genres I have worked in include education, drama, comedy, documentary, factual and entertainment, and I have also written 6 children's books.
Full details of my writing career and my workshops can be found on my website: www.rickvanes.co.uk

Rick spent the afternoon in school on Thursday 28 April working with Reception for an hour and then Year 5 for an hour. His presentation to the children was excellent. He fully engaged all the children in the physical activities, which brilliantly led into the written work completed by the children. The children in both these classes were motivated and stimulated by his approach.
Rick spent the whole day on Wednesday 4 May working with the rest of the classes in school. He spent an hour and a half working with Year 6, who were desperate to continue working with hi when the session finished. One of our reluctant writers in Year 3 said to his teacher "Rick said he would improve my writing and he has, look at it" the following day when he started a piece of written work.
I cannot stress strongly enough the positive iimpact Rick had on the children. His input has enthused the staff to continue to develop other approaches to the teaching of writing.
Rick also attended a staff meeting on Wednesday
20 April to brief the staff on what he could offer and to negotiate with them an appropriate package for each class.

This is an extremely belated thank you for the fantastic work you did for the Writing Together residency at Fulford School earlier this year. I am very embarrassed that it has taken me so long to say thank you. You are still talked of fondly by teachers and pupils alike and I hope we will meet up again!
You were highly efficeint and everyone has benefited from your work - lots of colleagues are using your ideas and resources.
Thank you once again.
