Broadcasting, Journalism and Screen Studies/Media Communications

Courses available include: Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Communications / BA (Hons) Broadcasting, Journalism and Screen Studies. Screen Studies combines traditional academic approaches to film and media studies with the very latest research into how we interact online and students are encouraged to engage with a diversity of contemporary screen cultures and technologies. Media Communications is focused on the history of communication to mass audiences and understanding the theories that link the communication of messages. These topics are well matched to the more practical, hands-on aspects of broadcasting and journalism.
Duration Full Time: 3 years. Part-time: Five years
Level BA Single Hons
Cost UK/EU Full Time Tuition Fees 2012/13: £5,850. Part Time: £1,245. Overseas: To Be Confirmed.
 
Course content: research methods for journalists and broadcasters, ground floor journalism personal, professional and academic skills, the commissioning process - selling ideas, the media business, multimedia journalism, applied broadcasting, media law and ethics. Assessment for this course is by means of a portfolio, project briefs and reports and journals.
Requirements
240 UCAS tariff points at GCE A level or equivalent.

Screen Studies Modules: Virtual Worlds - Critical Approaches to New Media, Big Screen/ Small Screen – Critical Approaches to Film and Television Studies, National Cinemas: British & European Film Culture, World Cinemas 1: American Cinema, Life on Screen – Television Drama, Documentary Modes and New Media , Gender, Sexuality and Representation, Popular Cinema, Identity, Gender and Sexuality in Screen Cultures, World Cinemas 2: Films from the Southern Hemisphere. Journalism and Broadcasting Modules: Applied Broadcasting Practice, Media Law, The Commissioning Process, Ground Floor Journalism, Research Methods for Journalists and Broadcasters. Media Communications Modules: Language Rhetoric and Communication, Broadcasting and Presentation Skills, Professional Contexts, Integrated Media Communications, Media Project and Portfolio, Case Study.
