Creative Writing

The BA in Creative Writing is a vocational degree offered across the Institute of Literature Languages and the Creative Arts. This degree programme provides exciting and diverse opportunities for writing across a broad variety of forms and genres. Under the expert guidance of a team of award winning writers you will develop creative skills that will enable you to work confidently and effectively in a whole host of styles that are valued and widely sought by employers. You will study with staff across the departments of English & Creative Writing, Theatre, Film & Television Studies and Welsh & Celtic Studies. Our aim is to stimulate, encourage and challenge your creativity in these diverse settings, ensuring that by the end of your degree you will have not only a portfolio of exceptional creative material but also the skills and attributes to flourish in any workplace that demands the craft of the written word.

The Creative Writing Degree offers a broad curriculum that cuts across traditional boundaries of genre, form and purpose. You will have opportunities for experimentation with language, media, style and presentation. Immersed in a supportive and vibrant writing community, you will benefit from a whole host of opportunities to work with industry specialists in publishing, performing and developing your work. At Aberystwyth you will become part of a flourishing creative scene with a long and successful history as the spring for aspiring new talent. Working in the heart of Wales you will have the benefits of all this on your doorstep – an environment that students from further afield can only experience on the occasional “writer’s retreat”. And of course, given our magnificent setting and vibrant culture, we offer you extensive opportunities to engage with the culture and language of Wales, you can learn through the medium of Welsh and English and an appreciation of the potential for experimentation with language is part of the central ethos of this degree.
Requirements
GCSE: Grade C in English or Welsh. Grade B in A level English Literature
Modules
The course is structured around a series of core modules that are designed to enhance employability and life-long skills. In your first year you will follow “New Ventures: Marketing Creative Curiosity” which focuses on identifying and situating the skills you are learning in relation to personal and professional development and applying these skills in the real world. In your second year you will follow a professional practice module with a work-placement element. This module offers students support in developing employability through their professional practice activities. In your third year you will work on “The Creative Project” which is an extended research and writing project which takes the form of a creative writing portfolio of fiction or poetry or a scriptwriting project. Alongside these core elements you will choose option modules across a broad range of creative writing topics these include the modules available to all English & Creative Writing students and creative modules taught by other departments within ILLCA.
