Journalism

Edinburgh Napier Universityhas one of the largest and longest established journalism degree courses in Britain. In addition to providing you with a critical understanding of the legal, political, regulatory and economical context in which journalism is practiced, this course is committed to producing effective and reflective practitioners. You will produce news for print, online TV and radio, as well as engaging in magazine journalism in industry standard studios and newsroom.
Duration This is a full-time course which last four years.

Gain dynamic and industry relevant training that prepares you for a career in the media industry on one of the UK's longest running journalism courses. From the start, we treat you not just as a student but as a working journalist and challenge you to produce work of a high standard so you can excel in a newsroom environment. Convergence is the key word in modern news so you'll research and create content for a range of media including radio, TV, online and print. The course is constantly updated to reflect the fast-changing needs of news organisations as the digital revolution unfolds. You'll gain valuable industry experience with a work placement where you can apply your knowledge to a real media environment. You'll also help to produce an annual magazine which is distributed throughout Edinburgh. You'll be involved in sourcing and writing copy, sub-editing features, designing the layout, and selling advertising space. This gives you vital experience and a professional publication that you can show to prospective employers. This course provides you with skills in news gathering, reporting and feature writing. You'll gain an in depth knowledge of copyright, publishing, business, finance and law that will inform your journalistic work. You'll also develop transferable skills in communication, IT, presentation, team work, leadership and project management.
Requirements
Typical year 1: SQA Higher: BBBB. A Level: CCC. Irish Leaving Certificate: B2, B2, B2, B3 at higher level, including English. HNC: B in Graded Unit. Subjects required: Higher English (B) / A Level English (C). Typical year 2: SQA Higher / Advanced Higher/ A Level: BBB at Advanced Higher / A Level including English Grade B. HNC/D: B in Graded Unit in related subject. Other entry requirements: As part of the selection process suitably qualified applicants will normally be invited to attend an interview/audition. To check the equivalence of your qualifications or experience, contact us using the enquiries button. Typical Entry requirements indicate the minimum qualifications with which students are normally accepted. Competition for places varies from year-to-year and achievement of the typical entry requirements does not always guarantee a place.
Modules
You will learn through a variety of teaching methods including lectures, specialist workshops, practical work in our studios and independent study. You will get the opportunity to specialise in your chosen area of journalism in the final year. You will study modules in: Year 1: Introduction to Journalism, Multimedia Reporting 1, Study Skills, Media Studies, Power of Language and one optional module from either Contemporary British History or another module from the School of Creative Industries. Year 2: Multimedia Reporting 2, Media Law for Journalists, Media Regulation & Ethics, Feature Writing, Broadcast Journalism 1, and one optional module from either Global Current Affairs, or another module from the School of Creative Industries. Year 3: Broadcast Journalism 2, Public Affairs, Information, Communication & Society, Researching Journalism, one module from either Sub-editing & Design, Television Production, or Journalism & Literature, plus one module from either Magazine Production, Online Communication, or Public Relations Theory & Practice. Year 4: Multimedia Newsroom, one optional module from Media Policy and Censorship, Popular Music Journalism or Power & Information, and one optional module from Alternative Journalism, Specialist Reporting, or Political Communication. You'll also complete a dissertation in an area of your choice and major journalism project.
