Arvon at Lumb Bank: Getting forensics right in mysteries and thrillers
Mon 30 Oct 2017 to Sat 4 Nov 2017
A week for crime and thriller writers who like to keep it real.
Course tutors: Margaret Murphy and Helen Pepper Guest: Ann Cleeves

As a unique pairing of writer and forensic specialist, we will help you to develop vivid storylines rooted in reality. Context is crucial in forensic work, as well as a rich source of stories. You will learn to integrate forensic techniques and real investigative methods into your writing, create credible villains, and write heart-stopping action sequences – while avoiding crime fiction clichés. With insights into the way real CSIs approach a crime scene, you will begin to think like investigators, giving your crime writing an authentic edge.

Margaret Murphy has written nine internationally published psychological suspense novels and won a CWA Short Story Dagger. She recently turned to writing forensic thrillers with the forensic expert Helen Pepper.
Helen Pepper is a senior university lecturer in Policing, CWA Dagger judge and forensic consultant on the TV dramas Shetland and Vera.
Ann Cleeves is the award-winning author of the ‘Vera’ and ‘Shetland’ books. Her novels have been adapted for radio and television and translated into 30 languages.
