Arvon Online Writing Week: Fiction - Creating Your World with Winnie M Li and JJ Bola
Mon 29 May 2023 to Fri 2 Jun 2023
Where would we be without fiction? As readers, as thinkers, as humans, fiction allows us to enter worlds both familiar and impossible. And as writers, we are entirely in control of how and why we choose to craft fiction – whether it is to explore a real-world topic important to us or simply to escape into our imaginations.
All fiction is forged from the same elements. Character and setting, theme and structure, plot and pace.
In this course with authors Winnie Li and JJ Bola you’ll look at these and other aspects of craft, as you settle into a friendly, supportive deep-dive into writing fiction. If you’re dreaming up a novel, toying with short story ideas, or somewhere in between, this week will give you the time and headspace to explore your fictional writing – and leave you with the tools to bring it to the next stage.
Winnie M Li is the author of two novels. Her debut Dark Chapter (2017) won the Guardian’s Not The Booker Prize, was nominated for an Edgar Award, and translated into ten languages. It has since been adapted for the screen. Her second novel Complicit (2022) was selected by the New York Times for their ‘Group Text’ book club.
JJ Bola is a Kinshasa (Congo) born, London raised writer, poet and mental health social worker. He has written three collections of poetry as well as two novels, No Place to Call Home and The Selfless Act Of Breathing, and a non-fiction book about masculinity and patriarchy for young people, Mask Off: Masculinity Redefined.
