Arvon Residential Writing Course: Landscape, walking and eco-poetics - Writing the Earth with Sarah Westcott and Will Burns
Mon 18 May 2026 to Sat 23 May 2026
How can walking, and writing, help us deepen our personal and poetic engagement with the natural world? Join acclaimed ecopoets Will Burns and Sarah Westcott to walk the land, find the lines and feel the rhythm of new poems as we connect with the more-than-human.
This week will explore walking as a generative practice, co-creating meaning with the living world. You will experiment with innovative ways of writing contemporary nature poetry including close listening, mark-making, serious noticing and paying deep and sustained attention.

We will head outside to write in the fresh air, moving our bodies, and our pens, in linear and lateral direction. We’ll look at the topographical facets of the landscape surrounding us, and explore how uncovering layers of geographical, cultural and biological history can deepen our feelings for, and writing about, living places.

The course is aimed at writers of any experience level; please pack appropriately for the British weather. We are very aware that participation in the walking and outdoor activities may not be possible for all, and we will do our utmost to provide alternatives during the week where we can.
