Arvon Residential Writing Week: Fiction Work-in-Progress - Cross the finish line (and make your novel shine) with Sharon Duggal and Beth Miller
Writing a novel is a marathon, and often you will find your energy starts to dip, particularly around the midway mark. This course will help you regain your headway and let the writing magic happen.
With tutors Sharon Duggal and Beth Miller you’ll learn techniques around character development, structure and pacing, as you explore the practicalities of redrafting and editing. You’ll come away with the tools to create satisfying and distinctive work that will hold a reader’s interest – and your own – throughout.
This course is ideal for writers who’ve made a firm start on a novel but need an energy boost to keep the momentum going – or for writers who have a finished first draft but who would benefit from feedback and support to ensure their story really shines through.
Course participants are invited to submit up to 1000 words of their work-in-progress by Friday 15th September 2023. This is optional, but provides a chance for the tutors to read your work in advance and discuss it with you during your one-to-one tutorials.
Sharon Duggal writes novels and short stories. Her second novel Should We Fall Behind (2020) was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature’s 2021 Encore Award, selected for Between the Covers, BBC television’s flagship book show and chosen as a Prima Magazine Book of the Year. Her debut, The Handsworth Times was The Morning Star’s ‘Fiction Book of the Year’ 2016 and selected as the Brighton City Reads 2017. She is currently working on her third novel.
Beth Miller is the author of six novels, including the bestselling The Missing Letters of Mrs Bright (2020). Her most recent novel, The Woman Who Came Back to Life, was published in 2022. She has also published two non-fiction books about Shakespeare and the Archers. She is a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Brighton University.
