Autobiographical theatre is a popular and growing genre. Caroline Horton has been drawing on her own life experiences and turning them into shows since 2010.
In this workshop, she’ll share some starting points and explore how form and restriction can transform your source material into something more universal whilst retaining the power of the personal. Even when dealing with autobiography, we can still give ourselves licence to play and translate and sublimate. As a theatre-maker, the workshop will help you think about your work as performance as well as on the page.
Caroline Horton was nominated for a 2013 Olivier Award for You’re Not Like the Other Girls Chrissy. Mess toured internationally after opening at the Traverse, where it won a Stage Award. Other work includes Islands (The Bush), Tranklements (New Vic) and Penelope Retold (Derby Theatre). She regularly works in radio, and her first play for Radio 4 was shortlisted for the Imison Award. She collaborates with other companies as a performer, writer and director, mentors artists and leads workshops. She was Creative Fellow at Birmingham University in 2018/19. All of Me opened in Edinburgh in 2019, winning a Stage Award and The Scotsman Mental Health Award.
