City Lit: World-building for fantasy and speculative fiction writers with Mary Victoria (Online)
Sat 10 Jul 2021 to Sat 10 Jul 2021
Have you ever wondered how Tolkien or C.S. Lewis did it? On this course you'll learn how to build worlds that lend your fantasy or speculative fiction credibility, richness and the kind of depth that leaves readers wanting more. Ideal for enthusiastic writers with an idea to explore or a writing project in progress.

Using a mix of exercises, close textual readings, and examinations of film, TV and graphic novels, this course will help you define your world more clearly, alongside the characters, tech and universal laws that inhabit them. Bring your writing materials and a sense of adventure! It may also help you to come prepared with an idea for your speculative world, or a piece of writing in progress.

Mary Victoria spent ten years as an animator in the VFX industry before publishing her first three fantasy novels with HarperCollins Australia: Tymon’s Flight, Samiha’s Song and Oracle’s Fire. Samiha’s Song went on to win the Sir Julius Vogel Award for Best Novel.
