Converge at York St John University Creative Writing Conference: I Have Something Important to Say
Join us on Wednesday 16th July 2025 for this year's Creative Writing conference called “I have Something Important to Say”, 12:30pm to 5:30pm in the Creative Centre at York St John University. The conference will discuss how creative writing can help people to overcome injustice. Registration is through Eventbrite and is free; all welcome.
Every year Converge students at York St John University write pieces for the Creative Writing Heals anthology. Students report that their studies at Converge helps them to share their experiences in a way they have not otherwise been able to do. This raises significant questions of social and epistemic injustice and suggests that creative writing can help people with lived experience of mental illness, so often excluded and ‘othered’, to find a voice too long ignored.
This conference will discuss how creative writing can help people to overcome injustice. Through a range of workshops and presentations the conference will investigate three key questions:
1. How are we silenced?
2. How does creative writing help us to be heard?
3. Where do we go from here? What do we need to do so that more people can have their voices heard?
We look forward to welcoming delegates to contribute their views, writings and thoughts to this important debate.
