Creating a Winning Non-fiction Book Proposal
Mon 22 Jun 2026 to Mon 22 Jun 2026
Spend the day with editorial consultant and former commissioning editor Julia Kellaway and publisher Steph Caswell, as we show you how non-fiction books actually get bought and how to position your idea for success.

Many brilliant book ideas have never been published. Not because the writing isn’t good enough or because the author lacks expertise, but because the proposal isn’t clear, compelling or commercially convincing.

A strong proposal can open doors. It helps agents and publishers quickly understand:
• What the book is
• Who it’s for
• Why readers will buy it
• Why you are the right person to write it
• Why now is the right time for this book

That’s exactly what this workshop will help you build. Together, Steph and Julia will help you refine your idea, understand the publishing landscape and know exactly what publishers and agents are looking for.

Throughout the day, we’ll guide you through:
• The anatomy of a winning proposal: Understand what a strong non-fiction proposal includes, why it matters and how agents and publishers assess submissions.
• Clarifying your book idea: Get clear on your concept, your reader and the real promise of the book.
• Defining your audience: Learn how to identify who the book is for, what they need and why they’ll buy it.
• Market positioning: Discover how to research the market, spot opportunities and position your book in a way that feels fresh and relevant.
• Why you’re the right author: Learn how to present your expertise, credibility and platform with confidence.
• The biggest mistakes authors make: We’ll show you the common pitfalls that weaken proposals - and how to avoid them.
• Practical workshop exercises: You won’t just listen all day. You’ll actively work on your own proposal ideas with guided exercises, feedback and discussion.
