What do successful creatives Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, David Bailey, Florence Welch and Daniel Radcliffe have in common?
Answer: They’re among the 2 to 6 per cent of people with dyslexia or dyspraxia.
Dyslexia and dyspraxia are part of an umbrella of conditions called Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs), which also includes Attention Deficit Disorder and Aspergers Syndrome. People with SpLDs think and learn differently to most - hence the name - and have profound peaks and troughs in their abilities. SpLDs are often seen as a burden.
But with the right playing to their strengths and the right support for their weaknesses, those with SpLDs can lead happy, productive and creative lives. Dyslexic designer Ben Gregory and dyspraxic writer Maxine Frances Roper talk about the blessing and the curse of their conditions, the relationship between dys’s and creativity, and their impact on life.
The event will cover:
- What is dyslexia? What is dyspraxia? The basics explained
- The bright side of dyslexia and dyspraxia Why are so many creatives dyslexic and dyspraxic? Why creativity is good for us, and why we’re good for the industry
- The problems Key difficulties, plus secondary effects (social, emotional, organisational)
- Support in work Playing to strengths, where to go for help
- Self-employment support: Is self-employment for you? Managing your time
- Compensating Quirky things dyslexics and dyspraxics do to make life easier
The event will also provide an opportunity for questions.
The session will take place at IdeasTap HQ, London Bridge, from 4pm-5.15pm on Tuesday 12 March. Book your free place via IdeasTap.
