Irish Writers Centre: Furnishing Fictional Spaces with Danielle McLaughlin
Sat 13 Jun 2026 to Sat 13 Jun 2026
In this online workshop, we will explore the Furnishing of Fictional Spaces, the role of the writer as interior (and exterior) designer. We will examine the choices writers make when furnishing a character’s surroundings, and the impact of these choices on elements of story.

Participants will be sent links to a number of stories/extracts to read in advance of the workshop, and we will also have a go at one or two short in-workshop writing exercises.

Danielle McLaughlin is the author of a short story collection Dinosaurs on Other Planets published in 2015 by The Stinging Fly Press, and a novel, The Art of Falling, published in 2021 by John Murray. Her awards include the Windham-Campbell Prize, the Sunday Times Audible Short Story Award and a Markievicz Award. Her second novel, Ritual, will be published by The Stinging Fly Press in 2026.
