Irish Writers Centre: Writing Poetry and Verse for Young Readers with Ruth Ennis
Thu 9 Jul 2026 to Thu 30 Jul 2026
Learn key information and techniques for writing poetry and verse for readers aged 0-18 years.

Are you someone who loves making up rhymes for the kids in your life? Or maybe you’re a poet who wants to explore writing for younger audiences? Or maybe you’re a verse novel enthusiast who wants writing tips in this increasingly popular form?

Each week will involve at least two in-workshop writing activities, with opportunity for feedback on your work.

Ruth Ennis (she/they) is a writer from Kildare. She has an M.Phil. in Children’s Literature from Trinity College Dublin. Her work has been published in The Irish Writer’s Handbook (Books Ireland) and I Am the Wind: Irish Poems for Children Everywhere (Little Island). Ruth’s debut novel Shorelines (Little Island) is a young adult verse novel retelling of The Little Mermaid, told through the lens of a fat protagonist. Ruth is usually working with books in some capacity.
