New Writing South: On the Box: Writing for TV with Pete Lawson
Tue 2 Jun 2026 to Tue 2 Jun 2026
What makes good TV drama? Whether you’ve got a TV or screenplay idea that you’re interested in developing or just want to know where to start, this workshop will look at how to develop and pitch an idea, how to shape dynamic story, snappy plot and create characters we root for.
We’ll look at how to layout script and scenes, how to write action not distraction, and talk about what makes great dialogue sing. There’ll be plenty of writing exercises as well as examples and top tips to help you imagine what your words might be like On The Box.

Pete Lawson has over twenty-five years’ experience of TV writing with over 250 broadcast scripts to his name. Since 2008 he has been part of the core writing team of Eastenders; for BBC1 he created and wrote the primetime drama series Being April, and has written for Casualty and London Bridge. He wrote the TV screenplays Drive and Sweet, the short film The Act, and has developed many projects with companies on both sides of the Atlantic. Pete has also written over 20 plays for adults and children, including work for the National Theatre Studio, Theatre Royal Plymouth and Radio 4. Pete chairs Brighton’s young people’s writing charity Little Green Pig.
