Nick Makoha: Reframing the Gaze - The Black Ekphrastic Mode Workshop
Sat 18 Oct 2025 to Sat 18 Oct 2025
Join award-winning poet Nick Makoha for a generative poetry workshop exploring The Black Ekphrastic Mode, a bold writing practice that reimagines European art, music, and cities through a Black cultural lens.
In this dynamic session, you’ll create original poems inspired by music, artworks from Basquiat, and iconic European architecture. Part of Manchester Literature Festival.

Through guided prompts and creative exercises, you’ll engage with the Western canon while developing your own poetic voice in dialogue with image, sound, and place. Nick will also share work from his collection The New Carthaginians, offering insights into how poetry, visual art, memoir, and theatre can intersect through the Black gaze.

All levels of experience are welcome. Come ready to experiment, reflect, and write beyond the frame.

Presented in partnership with Manchester Poetry Library at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Part of Manchester Literature Festival.
