The aim of the course is to facilitate the opportunity for individuals to develop both as poets and as performers of poetry. Participants will evolve slick and polished sets of performance poetry and will be given subsequent 'live audience' opportunities in which to perform these sets.

For those new to performance poetry, the rudiments of constructing and delivering performance poetry in ways that are engaging to live audiences is an essential component of the course.

For those already possessing poetic and performing experiences, the course provides a host of new and innovative ways to approach the performance of poetry and working poetry in live situations.

The course examines a diversity of knowledge, skills and techniques. These include the essential differences between page poetry and performance poetry and a practical examination of the diverse range of poetic and performance styles that are available to performance poets. There will be an ongoing exploration of those inspirational moments in which the ideas for new pieces of performance poetry are conceived and how these moments can be capitalised upon.

The relationship between performer and audience is central to the course as is the exploration of authenticity and believability within performance poetry.

Adapting to different spaces, microphone techniques and methods for developing confidence in performance situations will all be addressed.

Lastly, and perhaps most significantly, the relationship between the performance poet and the stimulating quality of words and language will be an ongoing theme that underpins the course. In short, the course provides exciting and thought-provoking ways in which participants can engage in inspirational fun with words and language.
