Ilse Pedler will be running several poetry events at Sidmouth Folk Festival again this year. There will be daily poetry writing workshops for all abilities from 3 to 7 August and a Poetry Open Mic on Thursday 7 August. You don't have to buy tickets to the festival to come to the poetry events.
Poetry for all writing workshops
Sunday 3 to Thursday 7 August 2025, 11.30-1pm
The Royal Glen Hotel, Glen Road, Sidmouth EX10 8RW
A series of standalone poetry workshops for all abilities. Using poems and other prompts, participants will be encouraged to produce their own work in a supportive and encouraging environment. No previous experience necessary, just bring pen, paper and enthusiasm. Come and enjoy ninety minutes of peace and creativity in the bustle of folk week! There will be an opportunity to collaborate on a short piece in Friday’s Showcase Concert.
Sunday – Poetry for all workshop. What can you write poems about? From barn dances to bananas, come and find out.
Monday – Poetry for all workshop. Today is the ballad session. Learn the features of ballad writing and then create your own.
Tuesday – Poetry for all workshop for all abilities. What do hermit crabs and poetry have in common? Today we learn about poems masquerading as other things, come and find out more.
Wednesday – Poetry for all workshop. Poems about art; how to harness your reaction to a painting, photograph or sculpture.
Thursday – Poetry for all workshop for all abilities. Poetry Games – poetry is fun! Using games and other prompts write your own poems.
