Spread the Word: Rejection & Resilience with Emma Lowther
Tue 9 Aug 2022 to Tue 9 Aug 2022
An online workshop for writers to explore how they handle rejection and build resilience in their creative careers. Part of Spread the Word's Developing Tutors series.

In the creative industries there’s a success bias. We hear about those who’ve made it and succeeded against all odds. But that’s not always helpful when we face rejection and struggle to cope. As writers, we will all experience rejection at some point and need to call upon our reserves of resilience.

Through a series of short exercises and discussion, writers will explore how to cope with rejection and build resilience. Exercises will include: reframing failure by creating a submissions log, creating a ‘Creative Convalescence’ plan, and examining worse case scenarios.

This workshop is for writers who are ready to show others their work. This might include presenting work to friends, or submitting to competitions, agents or publishers.

This workshop is part of Developing Tutors, a series of free workshops delivered by London Writers Awards writers who are talented writers looking to grow their workshop delivery experience.

Emma Lowther is a Northern writer living in London. She was a recipient of a London Writers Award in 2021. She trained as a performer at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and has since worked as an actor, comedian and voiceover artist alongside juggling zero-hours jobs as a waitress, cinema usher and customer service punchbag. As someone who’s bounced between two of the most competitive creative industries – writing and acting – Emma’s experienced her fair share of rejection. She now splits her time between performing, copywriting and working on her novel.
