The Miners' Strike: 40 Years On - workshops and call for poems
Sat 27 Apr 2024 to Sat 22 Jun 2024
To mark the 40th anniversary of the Miners' Strike, The Poetry Business is working with Sarah Wimbush and the National Coal Mining Museum on a series of events, readings and workshops, out of which we are also hoping to compile an anthology of poems.

In-person workshops at the National Coal Mining Museum:

Community and Activism with Helen Mort
Saturday 27th April 2024, 1pm to 3pm

Explore the relationship between words and action, with author Helen Mort. Discover how coal mining communities fought to retain their industry, with the support of other marginalised groups. Please note: This workshop will take place underground.

Youth Arts Festival: Coal Camaraderie with Matt Abbott
Saturday 25th May 2024, 1pm to 3pm

Join Matt Abbott to create a poem in response to the '84/85 – The Longest Year' exhibition. We’re looking for young people’s perspectives to be included in our Coal Anthology and Youth Arts Festival on 6 July titled ‘Coal Camaraderie’.

Conflict and Comradeship with Ian Parks
Saturday 22nd June 2024, 1pm to 3pm

Apart from fake news and the conflict which tore communities apart, the strike was a time for solidarity and community, ‘days of laughter and days of pain’. In this workshop led by Ian Parks, unearth these twin themes using primary sources.

Anthology submissions

We would like to see poems about coal mining or mining communities before, during or after the strike. These can be new or already-published.

Please send up to six to office@poetrybusiness.co.uk, with 'Coal Anthology' in the subject box.

We are hoping to publish a pamphlet in Autumn 2024.
