The Modern Ghazal with Mona Arshi
Wed 15 Apr 2026 to Wed 15 Apr 2026
Exclusive to The Verandah, Mona Arshi explores one of the most musical, one of the oldest and most widely used poetic forms, the ghazal.

Writing a ghazal takes you into a different terrain, culturally, musically and philosophically.

The form originated in Persia and has spread across continents. What are the challenges when Western poets take up this form in English? What elements are kept and what elements can be omitted or adapted to retain to the essential spirit of the ghazal? Renown ghazal poet Agha Shahid Ali said that ghazal couplets should be like "stones in a necklace that continue to shine in vivid isolation."
