The Well Review: 'Translating Illness' with Sarah Byrne & guest poet Stephanie Conn
Wed 4 Sep 2024 to Wed 9 Oct 2024
This course is for all writers at any level who want to explore themes of the body, especially illness, but also wellness. We'll look at a range of authors and artists such as Aleksandar Hemon, Susan Sontag and Vincent van Gogh. We'll also have poet Stephanie Conn visit us in Week Four for a seminar on 'The Poetry of Illness'.
How Much Does it Cost?
This is the lowest price a six-week course has been; just €135 for twelve hours of classes + materials + Zoom playback for the seminars you can't make. I have intentionally set this course as affordable as I want to maximise accessibility and diversity.
What is the format?
'Translating Illness' borrows from the Morning Edges format rather than the Masterclass one. The class will be presented in a seminar style with an opportunity for Q&A at the end of each session. We will not be sharing our work for critique in 'Translating Illness' rather focusing on developing our craft and practice. All sessions are recorded for playback so you have the option of attending live or doing this course at your own pace if you are in a different time zone.
Why Illness?
From basic reasons; we all must live with a well and ill body to more complex ones; illness can both hinder and help our creativity. Virginia Woolf wrote:
Illness is a part of every human being's experience. It enhances our perceptions and reduces self-consciousness. It is the great confessional; things are said, truths are blurted out which health conceals.
