Word Factory Workshop: Metaphorical Thinking with Adam Marek
Sat 6 Oct 2018 to Sat 6 Oct 2018
Metaphor is one of the most powerful tools in a writer’s toolbox. It’s especially useful for short story writers, allowing complex moments to be conveyed in a finger-snap. In this three-hour workshop, we will explore practical techniques to apply metaphorical thinking to every aspect of your writing, from descriptions, to character and setting, to plot design. This is Workshop 2 in the Word Factory 2018/19 Short Story Course.
When something is something else – metaphorical thinking, with Adam Marek

Aristotle said that the mastery of metaphorical thinking is 'a sign of genius', as a good metaphor shows an intuitive perception of the similarity in things that are dissimilar. As writers, we use metaphor to make our stories concrete to our readers. We use them to make the unfamiliar graspable, and to reveal never-before-seen aspects of the familiar. But how do metaphors work? And when they fail (we’ve all read some real stinkers), why do they fail? How can we write metaphors that deliver a kick of cognitive pleasure and understanding in our readers?

Tutor: Adam Marek is the award-winning writer of two short story collections – Instruction Manual For Swallowing and The Stone Thrower – both published by Comma Press. He won the 2011 Arts Foundation Short Story Fellowship, and was shortlisted for the inaugural Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award. His stories have appeared in many magazines, including Prospect and The Sunday Times Magazine, and in many anthologies including The Best British Short Stories 2011 and 2013.
