Writing West Midlands Short Course: Developing Your Poetry with Liz Berry
Wed 12 Sep 2018 to Wed 10 Oct 2018
Where do poems begin? How can we make our language sing? Whether you’re new to writing poems or keen to develop your practice, join award-winning poet Liz Berry on a journey into the transformative world of poetry. You’ll read inspiring poets, experiment with voices, forms and subjects, and take part in exercises which will help you to create and share your own poems with a friendly supportive group.
This five-week course will help you get to grips with some key elements of writing poetry, from imagery and narrative, to how the poem looks on the page and sounds to the ear.

Playful and nurturing, this course is open to poets of all stages.

Liz Berry’s first book of poems, Black Country (Chatto 2014), described as a ‘sooty, soaring hymn to her native West Midlands’ (Guardian) was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, received a Somerset Maugham Award and won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Award and Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2014. Her latest pamphlet is The Republic of Motherhood (Chatto, 2018) and the title poem has been shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem. Liz has been a judge for many major poetry prizes and works as a mentor and tutor for organisations including the Arvon Foundation, The Poetry School and Writing West Midlands.
