Artist Commission for Pioneering Spirit - WORD, National Trust for Scotland
Deadline: Mon 29 Mar 2021
Written word or spoken word commission exploring the people in the history of the illicit whisky trade that are rarely documented, including women, children and immigrant populations.

The National Trust for Scotland has embarked on a large scale, multi-dimensional, land-based research project, unearthing the scale of the illicit whisky industry across Scotland called Pioneering Spirit.

Delivered in partnership with The Glenlivet (Chivas), the project combines archaeological and desk based research alongside community engagement/outreach, broadening our understanding of the illicit stills industry and exploring the human impact of the illicit trade on people and place.

NTS seeks to commission 3 artists who will create a work/works in response to the research and stories uncovered as part of the project so far. These works will form part of our public engagement through the programme, engaging new and existing audiences with a range of perspectives around the social history and the landscape of illicit whisky throughout time.

There are 3 commissions of £1600 each, plus a small expenses budget (£200 each) and a materials budget for the Environmental Art commission (£600). This is inclusive of VAT and all other costs.

This commission: Written word and/or spoken word – will explore the themes of the hidden communities of women, children and/or immigrant populations that the traditional histories of illicit whisky rarely include. This work will form part of the National Story Search that is being launched at the end of March: a democratic, open call out for people to share their illicit whisky stories and artifacts.

Proposal: Please send CV, detailing relevant experience and a proposal for how you would take on the commission. The proposal should be no more than 1 side of A4 and the CV no more than 2 sides.
