Artist in Residence Opportunity 2020, Josephine Butler College (Durham University)
Deadline: Fri 4 Oct 2019
We are inviting applications for an eight month residency starting in January 2020 from artists working in any discipline (previous incumbents have been photographers, abstract artists, sculptors, writers) who feel they could work creatively within our college community. Open to established artists/practitioners, as well as recent graduates, in the UK and internationally.

We would also be receptive to applications from people working in theatre or music as we have a vibrant performing arts scene.

The theme for the residency is IDENTITY. How this is realised is open to interpretation. The material outcomes of the residency are flexible, but may take the form of temporary or permanent artworks/installations/productions/recordings created with input from students, staff, and the local community. We would like the end of the residency to culminate in an exhibition or event, where the artist could showcase the work produced.

We are seeking someone with a collaborative or participative style who can engage with students and staff, and can also link with some of our community partners. The AiR would be expected to participate in our college life; we operate a mentoring system for our under-graduates, we have scholarly talks, social events and formal dinners.

We can provide free accommodation and support with costs for studio space, artistic materials, and other costs upon agreement around a business case proposal from the successful candidate.

Durham is a great place to live and work and this is a good opportunity for an artist to develop their own creative practice in a wonderful geographic and scholarly environment.

For further details including how to apply, please see the residency brief under Associated Downloads on the right of the page.
