We are looking for part-time associate lecturers with expertise in Screenwriting, Genre Fiction and the Short Story to teach modules on the MA Creative Writing in 2021.
The postholder(s) will teach either the Screenwriting, Genre or the Short Fiction Workshop on Birkbeck’s successful MA in Creative Writing and the role will involve supervising students work in progress, developing their understanding of craft and supervising their assessed work.
The Genre and Short Story classes will run for ten weeks with a break for Reading Week throughout the Autumn term, from the beginning of Oct to mid-December. The Screenwriting module for ten weeks in the Spring term and is one of the key courses on our syllabus.
Responsibilities will include running a weekly writing workshop/seminar as well as administration and assessment of each module.
The minimum requirements for selection include:
• A Masters degree in Creative Writing or English literature or an equivalent qualification with specific subject knowledge of fiction both Genre and/or the Short Story and/or Screenwriting.
• A demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the key practical and critical frameworks that inform the teaching of contemporary Screenwriting and/or fiction especially Genre fiction and/or the short story.
• Relevant teaching experience in teaching at HE level – preferably at PG level.
In addition it is desirable that candidates have:
• A PhD qualification in a relevant area.
• Significant experience of teaching adults from a wide range of backgrounds (particularly in HE).
• Experience of teaching at MA level.
• A record of publication of short stories and/or fiction and/or experience producing screenplays.
• A Teaching Qualification.
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £61.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
