New Writing North are looking for a writer or artist to lead its three Creative Family Group programmes in primary schools in Gateshead and Newcastle, working with local families to encourage creativity and improve literacy in a supportive and inclusive environment.
The Creative Family Group programmes will re-start in November 2026, working with Key Stage 2 children and their families in school each week, engaging them in reading and writing through creative activities.
We are looking for a writer who is enthusiastic about working with children and their families, has experience working with children and adults on creative writing projects, understands the benefits and challenges of working with young people and families in a school environment, and has a good understanding of inclusive engagement practice including working with people with low literacy.
Creative writing will be at the heart of the Creative Family Group Lead’s own practice; you might be a poet, a filmmaker, an audio producer, a theatre maker or a multidisciplinary artist working with text and language. Whatever your area of specialism, an ability to bring books alive through storytelling and creative group activity is essential.
Fee: £13,650 (covering 26 sessions per school) plus access to a flexible project budget to support your work with the groups.
