Edinburgh Flash Fiction Award 2025

With a £2,000 first prize, the Edinburgh Flash Fiction Award has grown to become one of the UK's leading flash fiction competitions. Also announcing the Edinburgh True Flash Award which celebrates memoirs, creative non-fiction, and auto-fiction with a £500 first prize.

We welcome stories in all genres: literary, historic, crime, romance, gritty realism, contemporary, humour and more.

Judge: Meg Pokrass. Meg is a flash fiction mentor, early flash influencer and is the Flash Challenge Editor at Mslexia.

Flash Fiction Prizes:
• First Prize: £2,000
• Second Prize: £500
• Third Prize: £250
• Golden Hare Award: £500
• Write Mango Flash Award: £300
• 5 Commendations £100 each
• Publication is offered to authors of the top twenty stories (or more) in our next anthology.

True Flash Prizes
• First Prize £500 – Open to writers worldwide
• 2 commendations £100 each – Open to writers worldwide
• Publication is offered to authors of the top five stories in the Edinburgh Anthology

Our writing competitions, which also include the Edinburgh Award for Short Stories, the Edinburgh Young Adult Novel Award, and the Edinburgh Essay Award are managed by volunteers on behalf of the Scottish Arts Trust. As a registered charity, all funds raised through our competitions are used to support the arts in Scotland.
