Based at our Creative Spaces within the Scottish Borders, this residency will take place from 11th March to 5th April 2024 and will include private use of our Tower Studio, accommodation in one of our Hobbit Pod, and a weekly stipend of £350.

As a young organisation, we are particularly interested in writers who will help us explore the concept of ‘emerging’ and ‘emergence.’ What does it mean to emerge, and what can we learn from being in this position? Is it an invitation to creativity or a demand to prove oneself?

We invite writers to interpret the term “emerging” in whatever way they choose. Ways to explore the theme include but are not limited to:
Emerging versus established
Emerging creative practice (how are you shaping and thinking about your craft in its early stages?)
Emerging landscapes
Emerging fields of thought, cultures, or ideologies (what are becoming new ways of thinking, and does it mean leaving old ones behind?)
Emergence in relation to time/place (does the word specify a period or place in one’s journey? Can it be a shift or renewal rather than a beginning?)
Emerging as an act of change, protest, or opposition

This residency will take place when the Scottish countryside will be transitioning out of a winter slumber into a period of early spring. The writer will be provided access to our Walled Garden during their residency, and we hope witnessing the first blooms of the season will serve as further inspiration. Beyond the garden and natural landscape, we encourage the resident to also engage with the community of makers and creators at our Creative Spaces.

PLEASE NOTE: Our Creative Spaces is a rural location located on Marchmont Estate near Duns, Scotland. While limited public transportation can be arranged, a personal vehicle is often very useful.
