Factual writers for local history projects, Mantle Arts

Mantle Arts is based in North West Leicestershire and delivers arts projects with a strong element of community and participatory activity across the region.

The Project: In the mid-1980s to early 1990s Mantle Arts’ work was focused on oral history. The organisation recorded memories of local people stretching back to before the first world war, and distributed them on audio cassette.

‘North West Leicestershire Voices’ is an 18 month project that will preserve this recorded audio via digitisation, and use it as the basis of a range of interpretive projects to make this archive of local history more widely available.

We wish to appoint one or more factual writers with appropriate experience to produce material for the project:

Researching and writing four short historical booklets for a general readership, to accompany four local history CDs compiled from the audio. Fee: £1000
Researching and writing scripts for six documentary podcasts which may also be broadcast on local community radio. Fee: £2000.
Explanatory display text to accompany three exhibits/installations. Fee: £200

Essential Experience:
Writing factual and/or historical material for a general audience./ Background research. /
Willingness to travel to Leicestershire as the project demands, within the limits of the budget.

Scripting factual radio or podcasts. / Writing copy for museums or other heritage contexts./ Experience of local history research. A Midlands base.
