Following Professor Anthony Bale’s award of a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship, the Department of English, Theatre & Creative Writing at Birkbeck is seeking to appoint a fixed-term full-time Lecturer in Creative and Critical Writing for a period of three years.
You will contribute to Birkbeck’s sector-leading and growing Creative Writing programmes and may also be asked to teach on our highly regarded diverse range of programmes in English Literature.
You will contribute to the intellectual life of the Department, School and the wider institution, designing and delivering a programme of teaching and supervision to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully and to contribute to research to extend knowledge of the appropriate subject area.
We are particularly keen to hear from candidates working in emerging areas of creative writing practice. Areas of interest may include but are not limited to:
Creative non-fiction including autofiction, autotheory, memoir, travel writing, autobiography and biography, trauma writing, refugee writing, children’s and Young Adult literature
Creative writing, gaming, and digital interfaces
Historical fiction
Literary translation
Creative writing and the Global South
Reviewing and publishing
This is a full time, fixed term appointment until 31 August 2026.
