NEW! Edinburgh Essay Award 2025

First Prize £1,000 plus publication opportunity for top 15 essays. An exciting non-fiction prize for features, memoirs, travelogues, insightful analyses of historic, cultural, contemporary issues etc. Open to writers worldwide.

The Edinburgh Essay Award welcomes non-fiction submissions (max 2,000 words) on a broad range of topics from anyone over 16 years.

We seek essays on cultural subjects such as art, literature, theatre, dance, music, and other artistic expressions; travel narratives about locations, individuals, and experiences; profiles that explore the impact of people — from community figures to international icons; discussions of environmental issues from household to global level; personal memoirs capturing transformative or enlightening experiences; and examinations of philosophical, historical, or modern-day topics and more.

Entry Fee: £10 Free entry is available through the Scottish Arts Trust Bursary Scheme.
