Riddler in Residence, Exeter Cathedral
Deadline: Mon 17 Feb 2025
Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Exeter Cathedral is now inviting applications from writers, poets, storytellers, spoken word artists and lyricists, to become the next Riddler in Residence.

Working closely with partners to reach local groups and communities, you will be co-creating a literary response to the heritage of Exeter Cathedral and its significant Library and Archives collections, including the medieval votive collection.

This is an exciting opportunity to devise and deliver creative workshops with community groups and young people. June 2025 is the culmination of our 3-year National Lottery Heritage Fund project, so the theme of this residency is 'Thank You'. We would like the approach to be celebratory in nature and for the successful applicant to work with those partners who have engaged with the project throughout, including St Petrock's centre and Exeter College.

There will also be time within the residency to create your own response to Exeter Cathedral's building and treasures, including the 10th century poems and riddles of The Exeter Book. The Exeter Book has UNESCO Memory of the World status, signalling its "outstanding significance" to British and world history. Exeter itself is a UNESCO City of Literature and member of the Cities of Culture global network.

Contract and Fee:
Riddler in Residence fee: 22.5 days over 3 months @ £271 per day (including R&D and evaluation) to include at least 12 days direct work with participants = £6,097. There is a small budget for equipment and materials.

We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds. However you will need to demonstrate experience in creating a participatory project with community groups. Co-creation and environmental learning outcomes in a heritage context are key elements of this project and we will look for these to be addressed within any response to this brief.
