Robert Smail's Research & Practice Residency, The Southern Uplands Partnership
Deadline: Mon 16 Jan 2023
Connecting Threads is working with the National Trust for Scotland to offer a six week residency at Robert Smail’s Printing works for a UK based artist or creative practitioner (designer, maker, illustrator, writer, curator etc.).

The aim of the residency is to provide the resident with an opportunity to develop an existing or create a new body of work within the context of the printing works, the town of Innerleithen and its connection to the river Tweed. The resident will have access to the printing works’ extensive archive and to the letterpress and stop-cylinder printing processes, through collaboration with Smail's print technician and compositor.

The artist / creative practitioner will receive a fee of £1000/week to take part in the residency (total fee £6000). In addition, travel expenses for the duration of the residency will be reimbursed up to a value of £800. There is no accommodation provided as part of this residency, and so the opportunity may be best suited to someone who is within travelling distance of Innerleithen.

Connecting Threads is the cultural strand of the landscape-scale project Destination Tweed. Led by the Tweed Forum and supported by the Southern Uplands Partnership, Destination Tweed aims to celebrate, protect and enhance the environment and culture of the river Tweed.

Robert Smail’s Printing Works in Innerleithen, Scottish Borders, is a working printing works and the oldest working commercial letterpress printers in the UK.

Full details about the residency, including an application form, can be downloaded here

Deadline: Monday 16 January 2023 at 17:00.
