As part of its 30th Anniversary commissioning programme, Spread the Word has announced two new commissioning opportunities, one for London-based emerging writers and the other for London-based deaf and disabled writers.
Emerging Writer Commissions 2025
Open to London-based emerging writers who are aged 18+, writing poetry, fiction or narrative non-fiction, these commissions aim to showcase new work and provide a developmental and profile-raising opportunity. They offer a £2,000 commission fee, mentoring, development support and publication. You'll also get the chance to showcase your work at Deptford Literature Festival. They will be judged by TS. Eliot Award-winning poet Joelle Taylor and acclaimed novelist Olumide Popoola, Supported by the London Community Foundation and Cockayne - Grants for the Arts.

Deaf and Disabled Writer Commissions 2025
These commissions aim to showcase new work by three London-based, 18+ deaf and disabled writers and provide a developmental and profile-raising opportunity. Commissioned writers will receive a £1,000 commission fee, mentoring, publication and the chance read their work at Deptford Literature Festival. The judges are Ayesha Chouglay and Joe Rizzo Naudi.
