The Bedford Competition 2026

The annual Bedford Writing Competition is an international Short Story and Poetry Competition that has been running for 12 years, with the 2025 competition attracting over 2800 entries from 61 different countries. Open to anyone over the age of 17 years.
Short Story Competition - up to 3000 words
Poetry Competition - up to 40 lines
Prizes: £2000, £400 and £300
There are special prizes for writers aged 17-25 yrs. In addition, there are prizes for local Bedford residents.
Winning entries will be announced in March 2027 and all shortlisted and winning entries being published in The Bedford Competition Anthology. Winning poems will be submitted to the Forward Prize for Poetry.
Entry fees: £8.50 or 3 for £17. Students, £6 or 3 for £12.
