Writer in Residence, Walbottle Campus
Deadline: Fri 15 Mar 2019
Walbottle Campus has a culturally diverse population of enquiring minds. One of our strengths is that we recognise the dexterity of our students’ social backgrounds and seek to celebrate them. It is hoped that through creative writing workshops, our pupils will have the opportunity to explore their own cultural heritage and understand their role within their local community.

Concepts such as social responsibility, morality, conflict, reputation etc. will be introduced to KS3 pupils through enquiry-based learning. As such, the objective of the curriculum is not to simply introduce these ideas but provide pupils with meaningful experiences, so that they have a deep and rich understanding of the theme before GCSE study. The writer in residence will help to provide an opportunity to approach their focus theme from an alternative angle.

Proposed outline of writing workshops: The writer in residence will work in school one day a week during term time until July. They will work with groups of students from years 7 – 8, with each year group given an enquiry based question for their chosen topic. A genre of writing will be selected to help enrich their understanding of the theme by adopting the role of writer. Writing produced as part of the project will be compiled into an anthology.

Residency term: April - July 2019, 16 days in total, with a minimum of 1 day in school per week (term time only), dates and times to be agreed on appointment.

We would welcome writers from the local area who have an understanding of the cultural context of the city.
