ØY Festival Residency - Papa Westray
Deadline: Fri 31 Aug 2018
The ØY Festival is an annual three day festival of islands, held every November at The Kelp Store on Papa Westray, one of the northern most islands of the Orkney archipelago. We are looking to host an artist in residence from 16-18 November 2018 to develop a piece of work in response to the Space Station ØY theme. We are searching for artists, thinkers, writers, engineers, scientists, makers, performers, sound creators and film makers to re-imagine islanders as future pioneers of far and distant planets.
Islanders become islonauts, archipelagos become constellations.
Traditionally Island people have been valued as pioneers, at the forefront
of exploration and colonization of new worlds.
Who better to be at the frontier of space exploration, individuals who can
turn their hands to anything, farmers, engineers,
fisherman, architects, inventive and resourceful with finite means. With the
foundations and skills for living in small communities, often distant from
civilisation, having chosen the path of self determination.
Could islands be the model for future colonization of distant/new worlds.
Choose one of these four stages:
Stage One - Islands as terrestrial analogues for deep space worlds.
Stage Two - The journey to the stars.
Stage Three - Space Station ØY.
Stage Four - Islands become constellations - illusions of actual
connectivity, networked community of inhabitants and neighbouring celestial
bodies.
We can provide 4 nights accommodation on Papay, flights or ferry travel from
Kirkwall - Orkney, and Papay made delicious sustinence for the weekend and
free entry to all events and exclusive ØY Festival merchandise.
