Young Writer in Residence, The Customs House

The Customs House, South Shields are delighted to be preparing for our Takeover Festival for 2023. Each year The Customs House is taken over by emerging artists and arts professionals aged up to 25 years of age for a week of theatre, cinema, music, breakdance, poetry, creative workshops and visual art.
The Young Writer in Residence’s opportunity has become an important talent development opportunity for the venue, and the region with many of the previous play’s alumni going on to be represented by theatrical agents and creating huge interest in the writers’ work.
The chosen writer will be mentored by a professional playwright and will have their work staged in the venue’s Main House as the finale of Takeover Festival on 2 June 2023.
The Customs House are keen to hear stories that aren’t usually seen on stage, and are seeking submissions which have young people’s voices at its heart, and a narrative that is firmly rooted in the North East. The final version would run at between 45-60 minutes, with no interval and would be suitable for audiences aged 14+. There would need to be roles for five young actors (17-25 years), these may play single parts or as multi-roles.
1 April: Deadline for submission of a detailed synopsis, character list & suitable audition sides
10-12 April: Auditions for actors
4 May: Final draft submitted
Because of funding, the Young Writer in Residence would need to be aged 25 or under and be from/live in the North East of England. The total fee allocated to the writer for the opportunity is £1000.
