Starting in the small press world of the 1980s, I studied Creative Writing and Literature and co-founded Stride Magazine. One early reviewer commenting, ‘Palmer has the impressive gift of word economy, using a stark interplay of image and lyric to produce poems of depth and beauty.’
Since then I have dabbled with journalism and reviewing, written an ‘incisive’ study-guide on the Hound of the Baskervilles (so says the Sherlock Holmes Society of London) and published three books on writing for language-learners with Cambridge University Press, one of which was chosen by the English Language Gazette as their ‘Book of the Month’.
I've run various writing workshops (both evening and residential) and performed my own work at a variety of venues and events.
In recent years I have collaborated on various projects with the composer Jenni Pinnock, including a new song cycle, 'Cracked Voices' (funded by Grants for the Arts and the PRS Foundation). The Daffodil Perspective, commented 'Not only intriguing gloriously quirky stories, but really personal.'
I am currently working on a historical biography.
I am open to commissions, creative collaborations and running workshops.
