Membership Categories and Benefits

Professional Membership – £75: all individuals working as professional writers in education and the community are encouraged to join at this rate, which includes public liability insurance cover (£10m), processing of Enhanced DBS checks (for an additional fee) and the option to add your details for promotion via NAWE’s Professional Directory. The Public Liability Insurance cover provided through your NAWE Professional Membership is only active as long as your membership is in place and will expire if this is not renewed. Please also note that only the individual named on the Professional Membership is covered under the Public Liability Insurance and not a company or trading entity. If you sign up to Professional Membership with your alias/trading name, then you must be able to prove that you are the same person for the Public Liability Insurance to apply. For schools and other employers, such membership provides an important mark of professional standing. Other benefits include the members magazine and reduced rates for all NAWE events.

Professional Graduate Membership – £37.50: this new membership category is for university creative writing students who have recently graduated and aims to support the move from student to working as a professional writer in education and the community. It includes all the benefits of Professional Membership including public liability insurance cover (£10m), processing of DBS checks (for an additional fee) and promotion via NAWE’s Professional Directory. The Public Liability Insurance cover provided through your NAWE Professional Membership is only active as long as your membership is in place and will expire if this is not renewed. Please note: this special discounted rate applies to the first year of NAWE membership only. When renewing, the second year will be at the usual Professional Member rate. This offer is available for people joining NAWE for the first time and for existing Student/Associate members who wish to upgrade their membership. 

Associate/Student Membership – £30: this rate is for any other writers or colleagues who wish to be involved and keep fully up to date with our work. It provides reduced rates for all NAWE events and publications, and free online access to the NAWE magazine and its archive.

Institutional Membership – £225: this is primarily for universities and UK writing organizations. It provides full access to resources (including the online magazine) for up to 10 named individuals, together with reduced rates for all events, and publications and publicity (such as international promotions). Courses and opportunities offered by the institution are given maximum (free) publicity on the NAWE website, and one free advertisement in the magazine. Processing of DBS checks (for an additional fee) is also available.

  • up to 15 named members of staff/students: £255 per annum 
  • up to 20 named members of staff/students: £325 per annum 
  • up to 25 named members of staff/students: £355 per annum
  • up to 30 named members of staff/students: £390 per annum

Overseas Membership: individuals based outside the UK can subscribe as Associate Members (£30). Likewise, universities outside the UK can subscribe as Institutional Members.

E-Membership - £15: this provides the fortnightly Writer’s Compass e-bulletin with details of all jobs and opportunities for writers generally. The e-bulletin is also sent to members in all other categories.
